Mitchell: Arizona Eligible for Additional DOT Stimulus Funding

State Can Compete for Energy Reduction Grants

Today U.S. Rep. Harry Mitchell announced that Arizona is eligible to compete for additional stimulus funding through the Department of Transportation (DOT). DOT has made $100 million in grants available for public transportation projects.

The funding is provided through the new Transit Investments for Greenhouse Gas and Energy Reduction (TIGGER) program. These funds will be awarded through a competitive grant process for public transportation projects that reduce a transit system's greenhouse gas emissions or energy use.

"As Arizona grows, so do our energy and transportation needs," Mitchell said. "This funding has the potential to address both of these critical issues. Not only can it help modernize our public transit systems, it can also boost our economy by putting people to work on important projects."

The grants were approved as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which Congressman Mitchell voted for last month.
